Light up the Holidays

DECEMBER 14—The City of Round Rock launched a pilot program called Light up the Holidays for Meals On Wheels (MOW). A retired Round Rock school teacher needed help with some yard work and the project expanded to hanging her Christmas lights since she was hesitant to climb a ladder. Employees of Home Depot brought donated lights and members of the Round Rock Police Department converged on three homes last week to help Meals on Wheels clients for the holidays. Home Depot and other donors contributed 1,800 lights (over $300) of brand new LED holiday lights to enhance the homes of three local MOW residents. Home Depot store manager himself also came out to assist in putting up the lights.

The group received assistance from Opportunities Executive Director Marco Cruz and Site Manager Megan Steele, all three homes were finished in record time.

One resident was incredibly grateful to have so many people come to her home and decorate it for the very first time. As this event was considered a success, plans are being made to expand and improve it for next year. Thank you to the City, Home Depot, and the Round Rock Police Department for making this event possible.

In partnership with Subaru of Georgetown we will be collecting canned goods for our local seniors.  Our goal this year is 5000 cans! If you are able please share and help us make this goal.  Please refer to the attached flyer and contact me with any questions.  We have a large trash can for canned goods collection at every senior site, at the main office and at Georgetown Subaru.  Thank you all for the work you do!

Season of Caring

NOVEMBER 28—We are pleased to announce that our Opportunities nominee for the Austin American Statesman “Season for Caring” has been selected as one of 12 families receiving support and assistance in this year’s campaign.

Season for Caring highlights the needs of local families who have been nominated to the program by regional nonprofit organizations. Through donations from the community and local businesses, Season for Caring has raised more than $10.5 million since 1999 to help thousands of families throughout Central Texas.

Our 2017 nominees, Jazmyne Johnson and her family, participate in our Head Start program in Hutto and thanks to the generosity of local donors, they will get help for their family wish list. The Johnsons are hoping to have a home of their own or housing assistance, household items, a reliable car and seats for her three young children. Jazmyne has a son, Nehemiah (3) and twin daughters, Nakayla and Nyliah (4) and Nakayla has special needs so they hope to receive a tablet to support her communication and a buckle chair so she can share meal time in a big girl chair. They are also looking forward to fun things like a backyard playscape and toys or dance classes. Jazmyne continues to work toward a degree in biotechology so financial assistance is also high on her list.

We are so pleased to have this beautiful family are part of our Head Start family and it is our privilege to have been able to help them become part of this great Austin-area program. The presentation will be made Thanksgiving Day and we wish them a safe and wonderful holiday!

Covering Home with the Round Rock Express

NOVEMBER 14—Members of the Round Rock Express Administrative team came out to Round Rock Head Start as part of their project “Covering Home”. They participated in a mini field day with the 4 and 5 year olds; playing games, doing an obstacle course, riding trikes and just having fun doing physical activity outside! Our express thanks! 🙂
